Basic Backstroke Practice

These basic backstroke skills will build strength and coordination and ensure continued development of backstroke. Here are a few simple activities that you can practice at home. 

Practicing basic skills on land with visual feedback will enhance skills and provide an opportunity for the child to self-correct. Therefore in the pool the swimmer can identify their own mistakes.

Key points include;

  • Straight arm action
  • Arm passes the leg and ear
  • Arms are always opposite – one arm up, one arm down
  • Arms are continuously moving

TIP – practice in front of a mirror to see arm action

Duration: For best results spend 5 minutes 2-3 times a week practicing this skill

For age: 5 years – 10 years
